About Bathroom Vanities and Remodeling

The bathroom has become a 'destination' place in most homes today. Elegance and luxury are complemented with the right accessories. You might want to select plush rugs, elegant window coverings, artwork, comfortable furniture, or flowers to add warmth and tranquillity to your bath space. Using a theme such as tropical fish or Tuscan villa is a great way to spark up a bathroom.

Modular cabinets in various sizes, colours and materials, with enough storage space for cosmetics, detergents and bath towels are designed to suit most bath decor. Electric plug-points installed inside the cabinets help hide ugly appliance cords.

Choose sinks or wash basin styles to suit period or contemporary design schemes. Go in for a customdesigned sink carved into a marble or granite countertop, a classic pedestal sink, or delicate painted large bowls mounted on the top of the counter. Select taps made from marble, hand-blown glass, gold-leafed glass, or shiny metals for a glorious sheen to your sinks.

The flooring and walls should suit the colour scheme to a T. If tiles are your style, ceramic wall tiles come in painted or embossed designs in vivid colours. Before shopping for tiles, measure the floor and wall space in your bathroom. If you're doing a shower enclosure, bathtub ledge or sink countertop, remember to add edging pieces, corners, and borders. Non-slip tiles are trifle expensive but safer options.

There's nothing like a hot bath to soak into after a hard day. A bathtub or a Jacuzzi is a luxury but can make you feel pampered and relaxed. The bathroom will have to be large enough to accommodate them. If you prefer to change the location of the bathtub, opt for an ancient club-foot design. A sunken bathtub with a ledge lined with perfumes, fragrant candles and scented bath salts can look utterly divine. Add a hand-shower and taps in gold, polished brass, pewter, brushed nickel, burnished iron or silver to complement the theme. Bathtubs in vivid hues can look enchanting with matching bathmats and shower curtains. A shower cabana in frosted or bevelled glass appointed with steel and chrome taps and shower fixtures can be another wonderful accompaniment to your bathing interlude.

Display soft bath towels and face napkins in matching or contrasting colours folded on a corner shelf, rolled up in a basket, or hung from decorative hooks. Have matching towel bars in complementary finishes.

For a more exotic look have soap dishes in crystal, ceramic or chrome and shaped like seashells, starfish and other water themes to make a normal looking soap into a piece of art.

Display a treasure of collectibles on glass shelves or on the dressing table. Doll up sink counters with glass or clay figurines, family pictures or bonsai. Add a pot pourri of spices or dried flowers to mask odours and spread fragrance. Hang pictures that reinforce the colour theme. Use accessories such as boxes, baskets, and bowls that can double as containers for cosmetics, cotton balls, or washcloths. Add plants either on a counter, around a tub, or hanging from a wall basket since they absorb moisture fast.

Keep things simple in smaller bathrooms. Use accessories in lesser numbers but make them look colourful and interesting.
